Minilessons - Day 2 : A Real Education, Football & Tacos

A real education: The plight of teachers

After watching this video, please write your response to the situation teachers are currently going through financially, professionally, socially, psychologically and emotionally.

Students' Feedback

Personally, I view teaching as one of the most challenging occupations because it requires a huge amount of patience and kindness. After watching the video, I realized how many teachers are not financially secure off their teaching job, forcing many of them to take on a second job. This has to take a toll on the teacher socially and emotionally because teaching is already such a demanding job and now they have to take on another job, leaving them with no free time. This leads many teachers to feel disrespected by society because they feel that they are not valued as much.      Maggie Reich

This video is very disappointing but it's the truth. As an education major I know there will be challenges working as a teacher, but I have continued to pursue a career in education because I love working with kids; it’s always very rewarding. Teachers play a very important role in children’s development and success in academic abilities. They teach a child many of the fundamental skills needed to succeed in higher education and in their future careers. If it weren’t for teachers, we wouldn’t be where we are today with the academic abilities we have (reading, writing, comprehension, math, etc.). I believe teachers deserve more respect and a higher salary to allow for them to live comfortably. If they aren’t always worried about how to make ends meet, they can focus on their development as a teacher in order to provide the best instruction possible to their students. Jamie Norton

How to make tacos from scratch. with key ingredients

John Campbell

  • In a saute pan (I prefer non-stick but this isn't crucial), brown ground beef.
  • While beef is browning, combine the remainder of ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Drain beef. Return to pan. Add the sauce. Stir, and add some water if desired (I add maybe 4-8 oz.). Simmer uncovered until meat reaches desired consistency.
  • Serve on heated taco shells with cheese, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, and hot sauce or however you prefer to use seasoned taco meat.
  • Ingredients:
  • lb ground beef
  • 1
    (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2
    teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2
    teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1
tablespoon chili powder (heaping, I like to use either ancho or Penzey's medium hot chili powder)
  • 3
    garlic cloves, crushed

  • hot sauce, to taste (optional)

  • salt, to taste (optional)

  1. This video brings up a lot of feelings for me. Namely, I feel concerned, anxious and unsettled. As a person pursuing the education field, I am aware of the challenges faced by new (and old) teachers. I know that there is a significantly high drop-out rate for new teachers within the first few years. The rationale for leaving their teaching positions as provided by those interviewed teachers are some of the very real fears I have when I think about my future career.

  2. I thought this video was very disheartening, especially when they brought up statistics on average pay for public school teachers. I think a big part of the problem as well is the growing pay disparity based on what part of the country and/or what school district you are hired into. Teachers in lower income areas are often paid significantly less than those in wealthier areas, and yet are often are held to higher expectations and larger roles such as nurturing students who may not have that kind of support at home, and keeping their kids occupied enough to keep them out of trouble. It's sad to think that teachers (especially in lower income areas) do not get the respect they deserve. _Faith Markey

  3. This video really shows how under-valued teachers are in the U.S, and how this is shown through teacher salaries throughout the country. My dad is one of the 18% of teachers who have a second job throughout the school year- he is a NYC public school teacher and runs his own roofing business. In my opinion, teaching is such an important profession and requires a lot of work, and when teachers are not being paid enough, they are focused on making money instead of focusing solely on their job as a teacher to provide for their students. America has been- and still currently is- in great need for education reform, and this includes investing more into our teachers.

  4. The video is a microcosm of America. It is sad to see but there are many states that are just like Oklahoma. There is not a large enough emphasis placed on education. It is important that we provide you with the resources to teach students effectively. If teachers have to work multiple jobs to make ends meat, then they cannot teach students to the best of their abilities.

  5. This video is upsetting to me because of the unfair treatment of our educators. I feel empathy for teachers who have to take on multiple jobs in order to be able afford comfortable living. It is quite disheartening to see teachers who love what they do, have to give up on their career in order to do what is best financially for themselves. My mother used to teach preschool, so I have seen first hand how much time, effort, creativity, money, and care that teachers take to create lesson plans for their students. It was very time-consuming for my mother, and the pay was very little. My mother is one of those who chose to leave teaching in order to pursue another field in hopes of higher wages. I hope that in the near future education reform result in more respect both socially and financially on teaching positions, as teachers are the backbone of education and learning in America.

  6. This video was very upsetting. You can see how much teachers struggle in trying to survive by having multiple jobs while also trying to focus all their energy on their students. Teachers are so important to our society. We spend almost a quarter of our lives learning almost everything we know today from them. Therefore, they should receive the right amount of credit and support financially. When I was little, I always wanted to be a teacher but as I grew older so many people discouraged me from becoming one. They would tell me all the financial struggles and that it was not worth it.

  7. This video is really disheartening as it really shows how undervalued the entire education system & teachers specifically. It is ridiculous to me that teachers have to protest & fight for being so underpaid & just to get basic rights as they work so hard & deserve so much more than that. Teachers are some of the most hard-working people, & change so many lives at such an important age. Teachers are incredibly undervalued & they definitely deserve way more than what they get at this point. I hope that one day in the future professions like teaching will be valued more & looked at as an essential role & treated as such. -Rachel Buis

  8. This video shows the unfortunate outcome for teachers in the public school system throughout the United States. This video outlines the true hardships that the majority of teacher in our nation must face. The role of teachers in our schools is far more than just teaching their students the information of the subject curriculum. The latent role of teachers is as important if not more important than what they teach. Teachers, especially those in low income neighborhoods must instill leadership qualities, time management, and proper social skills to their students. This video shows that even the most successful teachers face countless opposition that take away from their ability to further educate our youth. This discourages people from pursuing a career in teaching and mitigates their ability to beneficially influence their students as they must take up multiple jobs thus inhibiting teachers from devoting all of their time and resources into their students. Our youth is the future of our society, if our teachers are burdened with such financial disparity, this will reflect the outcomes of their students and limit the potential success of our nation's future endeavors. This may arguably be one of the most important problems in our society today. Serious policy change is needed to solve this, but it is crucial to the advancement of our nation and the well being of not only our nations teacher, but also to our youth and their motivation towards furthering education.

  9. I think this video is really sad because it truly shows how we as a society value education. I feel as though the role of a teacher is the most important because it is shaping the future of our society yet they are paid so poorly. Its hard to motivate people to want to be teachers and want this job where there is not an economic incentive. I think besides this it also discouraged people from wanting to be a teacher because of the struggles they face in the role. It is super disheartening because you would hope we have the best conditions and opportunities for people with this occupation.

  10. Wow this video really hit home. My mom has worked in education my whole life and everything that these women spoke of is very much so a reality in education today. Aside from the salary decrease due to inflation, something I think is really important to note is the amount of time and materials teachers put into their classrooms to decorate and enhance the student experience all of which comes out of their own pockets. We as a society outwardly say that education is valued and important, however, the way that the professionals who provide that education are treated and valued does not reflect such. Education is a fundamental and we need to make the necessary changes to reflect how truly invaluable teachers who care about education provide. The students are the ones who suffer in the end when there is a lack of funding and it a change we need to make.

  12. This video shows the lack of appreciation teacher get in this country. They are not compensated nearly enough for the work they do, which is very draining both physically and emotionally. Often times they are cast aside as not being important and that in turn shows up in their salary. When observing them socially often they are looked down upon when in reality they should be praised for the amout of work they do to teach our future. All in all its very dishartening that for one of our countries most important jobs, they are so undervalued.
