Minilessons - Day 3: The Power of a Teacher, Swimming, Cubism and
The Power of a Teacher | Adam Saenz
After watching the video, what point is Dr. Saenz trying to make about people who enter the field of Education. Do you agree or disagree with him? Explain why? What moved you about his talk?
Dr. Saenz discusses the experiential consequences of teaching. He focuses on the "why" of teaching. Why would someone enter the profession and, more importantly, why do they stay? In the US today, our public school teachers face enormous challenges: financially, emotionally, physically and more. The schools are under-resourced, low funded, and lack support from the people in higher power, namely politicians. He remarks how his whole life trajectory, and its associated successes, all are attributed by the power of his teachers. That is, a teacher holds the possibility to empower the lives of the students to unimaginable futures. I agree with Dr. Saenz because I am pursuing education. I have worked with students in the classroom. When I see the influence of my interactions with them and their understanding of the world, it's so moving. On my laptop, I have a sticker that reads: "to teach is to touch a heart and re-write a future." I think this statement coincides with the remarks made by Dr. Saenz. Teachers wield enormous power. In doing so, they can alter a person's life. Not many other professions can say or do the same. - Kaici Aloupis
Dr. Saenz talks about the power people who enter the field of Education hold. Teachers have the power to inspire and redirect students' lives, which Dr. Saenz experienced first hand. I agree with him because I have also taken powerful messages from my teachers and used them to give me courage and inspiration to work towards my future. What moved me was his story and how two letters from his teachers fueled his journey of education. It makes me think about the power of all of our words, and how we need to be careful about what we say whether we believe we are teachers or not. -Remi Petit
Dr. Saenz pointed out it doesn't matter where you got your multiple degrees or how many accolades you have received, you will never know the stress of education until you have experienced it first hand day in and day out. If you enter it with the right “Why”, everything will fall into place. Those who enter the education field with the right “why” try to make lasting impacts and form relationships so their students can make an impact on the future. I agree with Dr. Saenz in the power a teacher can hold. I have come through a fair amount of teachers through my lifetime and I have formed relationships with some till this day and others I have kind of forgotten. Those who I had remembered are the one who shaped my perspective in different ways and believed in what I could do. This TedTalk made me think a little harder about the roles teachers have to play. Their words can shape a students identity for the rest of their life and they might not even know it. -Taylor Shell
The point Adam is trying to make about the people who enter the field of education is that most of the time they know what they’re getting into- the poor pay, difficult children, immense planning it takes to effectively run a classroom. but more importantly educators often the field because they believe their jobs are more than what they receive credit for. their jobs are to mold children to be the best possible versions of themselves and to learn things about themselves that they might not have otherwise ever seen. What really moved me about this TedTalk was how Dr. Saenz may not have ever amounted to anything had his 2 elementary school teachers not reached out to him and praised his potential. If it weren’t for theses two supportive teachers, Dr. Saenz would not have a PhD, Master’s, or even Bachelor’s degree, a family, and the chance to change a young girl’s life, much like his educators changed his own. - Faith Markey
Adam emphasizes the importance of both parents and teachers in helping to mold young adults. Since teenagers are so impressionable and sometimes cruel it takes a strong and kind person to help foster the best in them. Some people don't always have a strong support system at home so having support at school can make a substantial difference in their life. I found it very moving that he would adopt a girl from child services. -Michael Barnett
Adam is trying to express how important and incredibely demanding the profession of our educators are. He is trying to express the idea that our educators know the tough scenarios that they will face as they teach, but these people carry the power to influence the lives of so many of our youth. Our youth is the future of our society, this allows our educators to change the lives of those students and help steer them in the right direction even when they think they are lost. This is what Adam explains while he shares his own stories, the two letters from his teachers changed his life. The power of respect is to not disrespect. This is how Adam was able to turn his life around and continue his education. Sonny Qadir
Dr. Saenz is attempting to prove his point that teaching is a complex profession. It is time consuming and emotionally and physically draining. He focuses on why people enter this profession and why people choose to stay even with the obstacles they face, such as the pay, the types of children you deal with, and planning. I agree with his point, although I am not a teaching major this TedTalk opened me up to the difficulty of this profession. Teachers do not get the credit they deserve yet they are one of the only professions who has affected almost every single person. Everyone has to go to school and be taught but it is those few teachers or professors that can make or break someone's learning experience. I have forgotten a few teachers in my time but I do remember the ones that moved me and helped me intellectually and those who were not so kind to me. When Adam goes into detail about the two teachers that changed his life it moved me because it made me think back to my own personal experiences as a student. -Sydney Frankel
Dr. Saenz is trying to point out that people who enter the field of Education can really change a student's life. I agree with him because receiving encouraging words from your teacher, just like he did, can really make a difference and have a big impact on the student. It can comfort them, give them the confidence they need, allow them to move forward, etc. Educators should not give up on those troubled students and instead try to build a connection with them and understand what they might be going through. What moved and shocked me about his talk was when he revealed that he was the little boy in the picture who had been depressed and gone to jail. His attitude on life has changed so much because of his two teachers. -Jessica Maristany
Dr. Saenz's talk is centered on the impact that a teacher has on a student's life. He discusses the "why" that drives teachers to enter the profession. He uses himself as an example of how teachers have changed his life around. The part of the video that moved me the most was when he was talking about how he was a 19yr old dishwasher using drugs and wondering what the point of life was. He went home to write in his journal and found two heartfelt letters from his english and creative writing teachers. He said that these educators spoke truth into his life about who he was, and gave him the confidence to apply for undergraduate college, then a masters degree, then a PHD and change his life around. I agree with Dr. Saenz that teachers are so valuable and have the power to impact their students lives.
The point he is trying to make is bringing to light some of the truths about being a teacher. The obstacles and the challenges which go unnoticed and therefore teachers are undervalued. He touches on the importance of the teacher and parents being on the same page, too often kids don’t listen to their parents and a teacher being an influence in the child’s life can help put things into perspective. I agree with his ideas of the influences a teacher has because if it wasn’t for me having a great teacher once and from that me wanting to make the same difference to our youth as that teacher did to me. Overall there’s no straight shot at being a great teacher but I think his point is that we have all had a bad teacher and so we know what not to do as an example and we often forget that those lessons are just as important as those who have set the example for what a good teacher is like. I believe a food rule of thumb is to be to your students the person/role model/adult and teacher which you needed as a child (school age). -Francis Marty
Dr. Saenz talks about the importance of teaching, & how challenging it can be. He states that half the teachers teaching in school now will be in different professions in 5 years because of how difficult the profession can be. He emphasizes the "why" in teaching, & that having a "why" is so important. It is when you make the life impacting relationships with students when you have a real why. I agree with his outlook on teaching & his perspective. I think it is refreshing when someone is so honest & real. You can feel his passion for teaching & how much he has grown from the beginning of when he started out as a substitute teacher. I really appreciated the letters he received & how much they meant to him. His creative writing teacher's letter to him changed his life, because he said no had ever asked him who he was or focused on that. I agree with Dr. Saenz about how important & vital teaching is to children & how just one good teacher can change the path of a child. -Rachel Buis
Dr. Saenz talks about the importance of how challenging teaching can be. He really talked about how important the role of teachers are but also that parents have a huge role in young adults and their learning process. I loved how he adopted a child from child services due to the hardships of that community. He understands that because parents are a huge role in children's life and how they perceive it. Because of this he also understands that not every child and/or young adult has a support system, let alone a parental support system. Adopting a child himself just proves on how much he values the wellbeing of others and educating.
Dr. Saenz discussed how his two teachers changed his life. By their encouragement and their belief in Adam's capabilities, he felt empowered to go to school and do things he never thought he would be able to do. He went from being amazed that he could pass an intro English class, to getting a degree from Brown University. It is important that educators continue to empower and inspire kids and teenagers who may seem troubled or uninterested. Sometimes these young people need someone who gives them hope and believes they are capable to truly meet their full potential and be successful and happy. Being an educator is so difficult and demanding at times, and Adam shows that sometimes It can be very disheartening but educators should persevere and be more appreciated because they have so much power to change someone's course of life, which Adam clearly demonstrates was his case. I also thought it was fascinating when he talked about the generational impact of educators and how Adam was able to inspire his daughter. Overall, I really enjoyed this TED talk and hearing about Adam's experience, and It makes me even greater appreciate all the amazing teachers I have had throughout my life!
Dr. Saenz discusses the education system and the optimal way to enter. One of the first points he made which stuck with me was advising teachers as a therapist but had never taught. He emphasized the importance of experience in the field to guide someone. Many professions sometimes offer consulting or therapy in situations they have not done themselves. I am not against that but do like how he explain the experience is key. He also talked about a why. You need to always have an end goal and a why for the best results. I agree with him. Sometimes I just do things to do them but when I plan out my goals, I seem to be happier with the end result and have better results. This moved me because I hire employees and sometimes hire them with tasks. However, the tasks are important but the why is even more important. You want them to be self motivated as well otherwise you will be delegating for the rest of their career. They need to have an inner drive as well, their "why" that pushes them to their best self. -Prince Hassan
Dr. Saenz is trying to prove the point of value within the education system and where the value actually is. The value is held in the professionals who dedicate their lives and time to their students and education as a whole. Teachers and professionals when they enter the field see that value and believe in it, but all to quickly often find it is not viewed that way and it reflects in their retention. I agree with what he is saying and found it very interesting to hear about the ultimate path that brought him to where he is today. I think what really moved me about his talk was how candid he was about everything - his views on the topic, but also his own life experiences and how they shaped him. Another point I really connected with was when he was talking about the things he told his adoptive daughter after their father daughter dance, he was again so candid and honest with her that you could feel the bond they were growing in the moment. Overall this was a really interesting TedTalk that again sheds light on the issues we have in education today. -Katie Kean
Dr. Saenz makes a poignant point about the power that teachers have. Teachers encounter students at impressionable ages. Students look up to teachers and whether or not you have a good or bad teacher can fundamentally change your life. It is important to discuss the "why" when it comes to education. It is also important to be able to have practice in addition to theory. There are many things that cannot be taught through instruction and depending on the location a number of social factors can also interrupt a teacher. I agree that there is a need for teachers to be committed to education. They must understand it is a demanding profession that is underappreciated. With that being said it is tremendously important that passionate people enter the field.
Dr. Saenz truly showed the importance of teachers in this TED Talk, and how valuable of a profession it is. He explained how they are often underpaid or underappreciated but are one of if not the most valuable jobs that can exist because teachers shape the future. A teacher can completely change a students life by encouraging them to learn or giving them safety and support that they may lack at home. Looking back I clearly remember my teachers and the ones who changed the way I look at the world and therefore shaped the person I am today and I am so grateful for those people. The ones who push you to try your best and keep going are the ones who inspire you to believe in yourself and take on challenges in the world. I believe teachers should be held at a higher regard in society because they directly impact so many lives. Education is extremely important and it only takes one really passionate and driven teacher to make a student want to make a positive impact on the world.
Dr. Saenz talks about the importance of the reason beneath why certain people have chosen to be educators, and how, if they have the right "why," they can be very impactful in shaping their students lives. I agree with Dr. Saenz because I recognize the intensity of the teaching profession. These individuals take on the role of educating our children and thereby shaping our future society, which are both very daunting parts of this profession that is not shared by many other professions. In my opinion, people who go into the teaching profession without passion will not succeed at their job. Dr. Saenz's life story, his transition from a troubling childhood to a college degree, and the role his teachers played in this transition, was very inspirational and greatly moved me throughout his talk.
I found this TedTalk super inspiring because it really shows the impact that teachers/mentors can have on students. I can personally relate to having some messages from teachers that really pushed me to my full potential which I think it really what happened with Adam in his experience.
