Objectives:
1. An understanding of an abstract concept: mood.
2. The ability to hear music and know how to process and perceive it.
3. Enhances creativity and the application of the arts in everyday life.
4. Use of senses and exploration of emotions.
 Standards:
1. Musical Theory

 Plan:
Lecture:
·         Explain to the class what moods are and the difference between positive and negative moods.
·         Explain the concepts of moods along with visual images of what they might look like on faces.
·         Explain to the class that today we will be learning about moods and how music can affect and evoke them.
·         Explain to students that all will be needed is for them to look, listen, a pen and piece of paper.

 
Activity:

·         Play song and have students write down the word of the mood they feel or draw the face and if it is a positive or negative mood.
·         Play clips of a movie first without sounds then replay same clips with sound and have students write down how the sound made their mood change watching the scene. 

 Lesson Assessment:
At the end of the class ask student to write down if they liked the class and to use a work or smiley face expressing their mood from that class and if it a positive or negative mood.
 Student Assessment:
·         80% participation
·         10% completion of assignment
·         10% homework completion
 Homework:
·         Have students go home and listen to their favorite song then write down what the song is, why it is their favorite song and what mood it puts them in and why.

  Cross-Curriculum:
·         Using music to express mood combines musical theory and psychology at its most basic form.

 Technology:
·         Laptop and tablet are used to play music and show movie clips. Students can use their own phones/devices to present the songs from their homework.

Written Component:
·         Writing how the music makes them feel
·         Write their experience from the class and their overall enjoyment or dislike of it.



Career Skills:

·         Being able to understand their emotions is beneficial in personal and professional life.
·         Finding ways of understanding with techniques other than words sparks creativity that is beneficial in any field.
·         Learning how music enhances emotion and attention benefits in the creation and execution of presentation in any career.

Surfing Lesson for 7th Grade
Volume 1

Objectives:
1. An understanding of surfing, the equipment used, and how to begin.
2. The ability to practice surfing individually, both on the sand and in the water.
3. Increase focus on physical fitness and learning a new skill.
 Standards:
1. Athletics
2. Physical Education
 Plan:
Lecture:
·         Explain to the class what the different types of surfboards are.
·         Explain wetsuits and the other equipment used while surfing.
·         Explain the preparation of surfing and how to get started.

 Activity:
·         Find a suitable area for a surfboard and rest the board on the ground.
·         Practice finding a comfortable and balanced position on the surfboard.
·         Begin to practice paddling while staying balanced.
·         Practice standing up on the surfboard multiple times. 

 Lesson Assessment:
After the lesson students will be able to assess how much they think they learned and retained. The teacher will also be able to assess the students based on their engagement and participation.
 Student Assessment:
·         80% participation
·         20% completion of assignment
 Homework:
·         Due to the necessary equipment for this lesson students will not receive any homework.
  
Cross-Curriculum:
·         Physical education of surfing directly relates to mental health and clarity.
 
Career Skills:

·         Trying to learn a new challenging skill helps students learn how to take on challenges in life.
·         This practice of overcoming obstacles is very helpful in all careers.

How to build a paper airplane 
 
Building a Paper Airplane

This lesson plan allows for individual creativity and also student engagement and participation. 
This is a very simple activity and as such allows for everyone to have the skills and abilities to partake in the lesson. 
This activity is great for all age groups and can be done both indoors or outdoors.

 
For Grade School:


Step 1: obtain materials such as different types of papers

Step 2: Design choice – how are you going to build your airplane

Step 3: Begin to build – bend and fold the paper while pressing along the creases and add designs to plane

Step 4: Fly the plane

Step 5: repeat the process


This allows for all to be able to participate in creating a paper airplane regardless of skill level or ability.

This can be an indoor or outdoor activity

Also a great back up lesson plan/ activity to have in one’s back pocket

  2. Eddy Zhong's main argument about education is that education restricts students. The current system prepares students to do one thing, however, students are all different. It diminishes creativity and redefines success.

  3. Eddy Zhong argues that education holds students back through only catering to one learning style. Every student is unique and learns in a different way. Success is defined by receiving a simple grade rather than emphasizing creativity and promoting change. He wishes to see a change in the education system that caters to students' individual intelligences rather than funneling students towards a single definition what success is.

Eddy Zhong's main argument throughout his Ted Talk is that our current education system is detrimental to our society's children because it puts them into a box, restricting their creativity and ultimately decreasing their intelligence. He relates this idea to his own life by discussing how he struggled in school, especially with math, and how his outlook on his own education changed when he went to a business competition. Zhong explains how this informal educational experience was more valuable to him than his formal schooling education, and that this idea extends to a majority of U.S. students who struggle because of our current education system.

  5. Eddy Zhong's main argument is that our education system is making kids more academically intelligent, but less intelligent in creative intelligence. He tells a story that he and his team went to a school to present a prototype; however, barely any students showed up and those you did would start to spread rumors. Eddy went to present the same prototype to students that were a few years younger and there was a huge turn out and it went a lot better. Because of this, he argued that our professors and teachers should start to change their lesson plans to a more appropriate plan towards all types of intelligences.

Eddy Zhong's main point in this Ted Talk is to highlight how there is many different types of intelligence, and our schools currently focus on improving academic intelligence, such as math problems and literature analysis, but there is more beyond that. He describes a vital part of intelligence as being creative, innovative, and able to think outside of the box. Due to his innovative qualities, he was able to create a company with large success at the age of 16. However, other students his age scoffed at the idea and were unable to appreciate the creativity because the school system failed them and hindered their creative abilities. It is important for our schools to teach kids the value of innovation and creativity from a young age, and encourage students to find their passion and not be restricted to conventional pathways. Many students have this innate curiosity and creativity, as seen when Eddy Zhong went to the younger kids and they loved their business idea, but somewhere during the school years our system hampers that ability and really does an injustice to the students. There is more than one kind of intelligence and It is time that our schools start fostering all of these intelligences, not just the traditional kind. I really enjoyed this Ted Talk and Eddy Zhong speaking about his life story and experiences!

  7. Eddy Zhong emphasizes the important role that educators, parents/guardians, mentors have on children and their intelligences, such as but only not limited to academic. He shares his path followed and the successes. He urges others to encourage entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity to promote social change. He argues that the current methodology to the American education system is hindered by the rote path we tailor the students' educational experiences to follow. - Kaici Aloupis

  8. I think this video has a ver similar sentiment to the video we watched last week. He is talking about the idea that education does not cater to different types of people because students become less creative thinkers and more confined to the system. I think this is super accurate and I think contributes to social norms that are established for that age.
