Arts integration: putting the A into STEAM curriculum: Melanie Skankey

Arts integration: putting the A into STEAM curriculum: Melanie Skankey

Melanie Skankey is an art teacher at a science, technology, engineering, and math focused elementary school. In this talk she shares what this means for teachers who believe in Arts integration.

 Question

What is new about Ms. Skankey's approach to Arts integration that is different from what most teachers think arts integration is?

  1. Creativity is what is lacking from today's education system. A lack of art in today's curriculum is what causes students to be less creative in the long run. Art allows students to explore different intelligences in a natural way. There are skills that cannot be learned from strictly STEM classes.

  2. Ms. Skankey says that arts integration is learning about a specific topic through using the creative processes of art. She believes that academic subjects like math & science should be merged with art experiences for optimal learning. The students should be learning/ progressing in both the academic subject and the art discipline. This is different than other educators' approaches to art integration because some educators separate the arts from stem. They want their students to do art and their students to do stem, but they don't see the value in merging the two disciplines together.

  3. Ms. Skankey argues that we look at creative courses and traditionally "academic" courses as mutually exclusive from an educational perspective. However, we should look to combine the two. Art adds a dimension to learning that allows students to explore their unique intelligences. We should look to combine the arts and STEM.

  4. I really like her concept of art integration. It's more than just allowing a student to do any art to express themselves but that you use arts to teach other topics. I think it actually tests their understanding of the other topic because they have to re articulate it in their own way. It also gets them to use the other side of their brain when learning about logic and science and math.

  5. This was a very interesting TED talk. Ms. Skankey's approach really emphasizes the importance and potential of incorporating the arts into the core curriculum. She provided several examples of situations where facilitating the arts helped her students learn the concept better and express their creativity. For example, she talked about her lesson with plants and their life cycle and having 20 students paint the same mural. I especially enjoyed her lesson with the water cycle, I think not only is that a way for students to be innovative, but it will also help them retain the information for a greater period of time because it is such a wonderful learning technique. Ms. Skankey's viewpoint is different because she emphasizes how art can really be the basis to solving problems, personal growth, and success.
