Arts Based Learning: Intelligence

Student's Feedback

a) Based on the different definitions given by Kenneth Robinson, Howard Gardner and Peter Jordan; what is intelligence?

b) What is your take on Harvey Seifter's discussion on Arts Based Learning?

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Francis Mary, Brooke Jaffe, Lexi Fioto, Jonathan Cola

a) The ability to apply information given/known in different settings. Through creativity, giving new purpose to or filling a need and making something new.

b) Prediction: the innovation gap will continue to remain as long as we continue to divide “left” and “right” brain. Learning is a process and failure is okay as long as you have learned what to change and try again.

Blaire Bowers and Maggie Reich

a) Creative Intelligence: an individual’s ability to think and create new ideas in their own unique way

b) 2 different kinds of minds: there is a gap between an art person and a science/math person. In the future we need to learn how to mesh these 2 intelligences together because they see things differently so there needs to be a way we can meet in the middle

a) Intelligence means you’re different. You have a different mindset. Intelligence is subjective towards where you’ve come from and what you’ve experienced.

b) We predict that if the innovation gap widens then there will be more discontinuity amongst the consumers. Particularly, in an art classroom setting, students will be less connected to the art-based curriculum and to each other and the conversations will become stagnant. If we promote innovation and interconnectedness, then we can improve the capacity of the students to understand, relate to and appreciate art in multiple facets.

a) Intelligence- the ability to grasp a concept and express it.
b) Arts help stimulate your brain so you can learn better. It teaches your brain to think in different ways and approach things from different angles or perspectives. In relation to what employers thought made someone success being their creativity and communication skills, those are skills you hone more through studying art than from memorizing math or science out of a textbook.

a) We disagree with Jordan Peterson's opinion in the video we just watched that multiple intelligences don't exist. To us, intelligence is not solely measured by success in school or the workplace. Rather, there are more types of success that can be attributed to aspects of intelligence than school/job/testing success. Also, we believe that emotional and social intelligence still exist regardless of the fact that a lot of their characteristics can be attributed to personality and psychology. Intelligence is diverse and not dependent on IQ.

What is creativity?
Thinking outside the box, having imagination, and doing what you want to do

Intelligent- diverse dynamic and distinct
Its diverse, dynamic, and distinct because there is different kinds of intelligence. It’s not just about book smart, but someone can be intelligent in dance or art. And anyone can be intelligent, despite stereotypes.

What kind of teaching philosophy would you come up with?

Teaching philosophy that focuses on the students strength and has creative outlets based on the students interest to enhance their learning.

 a) Intelligence

  • Common sense
  • Instinctual thought process and analysis
  • We believe there are multiple types of intelligence as by an individual basis, one can naturally succeed in certain categories but not others

b) Arts Based Learning – Innovation Gap

  • Without proper arts engagement students do not learn to spur creativity and future innovation will diminish.
  • Incorporating arts into the classroom will allow students to think freely and have a broadened thought process.
  • Arts Based Learning will aid in closing the innovation gap and is necessary for future innovation.
